Michael S. Ferrell, M.D.

Fellowship Trained in Sports Medicine and Hip Arthroscopy
View C.V

Dr. Michael Ferrell is one of the foremost sports medicine surgeons in Montana and specializes in Orthopedic Sports Medicine, Shoulder Arthroplasty (shoulder replacement surgery), and Hip Arthroscopy. He completed two different sports medicine fellowships: the first in shoulder and knee arthroscopy at OrthoCarolina, and the second in hip arthroscopy at Duke University. He is certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.

Since coming to Bozeman in 2015, he has completed nearly 1000 hip arthroscopies. With that surgical volume, he is far and away the most experienced hip arthroscopist in the state of Montana and in a group of the highest volume hip arthroscopists in the United States. He is responsible for bringing the most advanced technology and techniques in hip arthroscopy to the state and region, including hip arthroscopy using a postless OR table for hip distraction and integrated software which provides patient specific 3D preoperative planning and guides intraoperative clinical decision making by providing real-time intraoperative feedback. Dr. Ferrell tracks his surgical outcomes via an online global registry of patient-reported outcome measures to ensure his patients are meeting or exceeding key performance measures. As a national leader in hip arthroscopy, he has co-authored chapters on athletic hip injuries in the Orthopedic Knowledge Update: Sports Medicine, a textbook which is the go-to guide for sports medicine physicians for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of sports medicine injuries.

In addition to the hip, Dr. Ferrell treats the shoulder and knee including ACL reconstructions, meniscus repairs, shoulder stabilization procedures, and rotator cuff repairs and performs more complex procedures. He continually uses patient-specific decision making in his practice.

"My mission is to provide world-class orthopedic care with compassion and integrity, respecting the fact that every patient is unique, and every problem is unique.  My practice will be based on the latest, up-to-date, evidence-based medicine with proven surgical techniques backed by demonstrated outcomes in the peer-reviewed literature.  I have completed 14 years of higher education and medical training at some of the most distinguished hospitals and schools in this country. However, I will have the courage and integrity to tell you “I don’t know” if I don’t. I can promise you that if I don’t know, I will seek the opinion of others. The patient will always come before my pride. Further, if I am not the “right” person to perform your surgery either due to lack of training or lack of experience, I will get you to that more qualified surgeon.  I will do my best to be on time. I will listen to every patient. Each patient will have my undivided attention. My time is no more important than your time.

Finally, I will never forget that every patient is someone’s father, mother, child, sister or brother. You are priceless to them, and you are, therefore, priceless to me. It is my pleasure and my honor to be able to care for you. It is a privilege that I will never take lightly."
