Dr. Elba Gerena Maldonado is a triple board-certified Physiatrist with a subspecialty in Neuromuscular Medicine and Electrodiagnostic medicine providing prevention or management of pain. Her passion for helping those suffering with impairments of the spine, neuromuscular system, and the musculoskeletal system is deep rooted and grounded in a desire to help improve function and quality of life. She is a native of Puerto Rico, fluent in both English and Spanish and, her heritage and community have always been very important to her. Her practice focuses on non-opioid, conservative treatment of spinal or peripheral pain syndromes by providing exceptional care tailored specifically to her patient’s functional needs. In her clinic she provides EMG/NCS (electromyography and nerve conduction studies), Trigger Point
Injections, Chemodenervation with Botulinum toxin for Spasticity and Dystonia, and Peripheral Joint Injections.
Her fellowship training emphasized integrated, interdisciplinary collaborative treatment methods encompassing Genetics, Medicine (Pulmonology & Rheumatology), Pathology (Neuropathology), Orthopedic Surgery and Pediatrics. She subsequently was chosen as one of the first Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation doctors to be included in an additional fellowship training program at Johns Hopkins University. She has also worked in academic medicine teaching other physicians in the areas of EMG, Pharmacology, Chemodenervation, with Botulinum toxin, and Neuromuscular Medicine. Her career has afforded her the ability to bring evidenced-based medicine to patients in Ponce, Puerto Rico, Miami, Florida, Missoula, Montana and, now to Bozeman, Montana. She enjoys being part of a team of physicians that have open and easy communication, provide continuity of care within the community, can think outside the box and, that provide world class care. She is a licensed physician in Florida and Montana and is a fellow member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPMR), American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM), Association of Academic Physiatrist (AAP), and the Asociación Puertorriqueña de Medicina Físicia y Rehabilitación (APMFR). Dr. Gerena Maldonado and her family appreciate the Montana way of life and enjoy being active outdoors including hiking, mountain biking, snowshoeing and snow skiing.
