Sprain or Break? Common Minor Injuries & How We Can Help

Twisted your ankle? Here's what your body might be trying to tell you.

A fall on the trail, a misstep on the stairs, or an awkward landing during a weekend game can leave you wondering: Is this just a sprain, or could something be broken?

Not every minor injury needs immediate medical attention, but knowing when to get checked can help you recover properly and avoid making an injury worse.

At Bridger Orthopedic, we see many of the everyday injuries that can happen when you're staying active. From ankle sprains and muscle strains to bruises and possible fractures, our team can help determine what's going on and what your next steps should be.

Common Minor Injuries We See

Sprains

A sprain happens when a ligament—the strong tissue connecting bones at a joint—is stretched or torn. Ankle sprains are especially common after rolling or twisting your ankle.

Pain, swelling, bruising, and difficulty putting weight on the joint can all occur with a sprain. Mild sprains often improve with rest, ice, compression, and elevation, but more significant injuries may need additional evaluation and treatment.

Strains

Strains affect muscles or tendons rather than ligaments. They can happen from lifting something too heavy, suddenly changing direction, or simply overdoing an activity.

A strain may cause soreness, muscle tightness, swelling, or pain with movement. Giving the area time to recover is important, but persistent or significant pain may warrant an evaluation.

Bruises and Falls

A simple bump or fall can cause bruising and soreness without a serious underlying injury. However, significant swelling, worsening pain, difficulty moving a joint, or an inability to put weight on an injured area can be signs that something more than a bruise is going on.

Possible Fractures

Sometimes, a fracture isn't obvious. You may still be able to move an injured arm or leg even when a bone is broken.

Severe pain, significant swelling, an obvious deformity, or difficulty putting weight on an injured extremity are reasons to have the injury evaluated. An X-ray or other imaging may be needed to determine whether a fracture is present.

When Should You Get an Injury Checked?

It isn't always easy to tell the difference between a minor injury and something that needs medical attention.

Consider getting evaluated if:

  • Pain is severe or continues to get worse.
  • You can't put weight on an injured leg or foot.
  • You have significant swelling or bruising.
  • A joint feels unstable or gives way.
  • You have limited movement that isn't improving.
  • The injured area looks deformed or out of place.
  • Your symptoms aren't improving as expected.

When you're unsure, getting an injury checked can provide peace of mind and help you understand the best way to recover.
