Bridger hits the Backcountry

This weekend, Saturday February 6th, the Northern Bridgers beckoned to one of Bridger Orthopedic’s PA-Cs, Brian Frykman, to venture into the backcountry and take advantage of an untouched white room tagged “Valhalla Bowl”.  Thanks to John Curry, a fellow skier and overnite videographer, we can get a taste of the space they had to themselves as their trek into Bridger mountain isolation was captured on the mini silver screen.  Check it out at

What is computer navigated or computer assisted knee replacement?

Computer-navigated or computer-assisted knee replacement has existed for over 10 years and involves drilling markers into the femur and tibia bones.  These markers are tracked by a digital camera system during surgery and the data provides feedback regarding the leg alignment during surgery.  The quality of the data depends on the accuracy of marker placement. This technology has not been proven to overall improve the alignment of knee replacements. It has the drawbacks of adding significant expense to knee replacement, increasing OR time, and infrequently leading to tibia fracture. This technique may be beneficial for orthopaedic surgeons who perform only a few knee replacements per month or year.  High volume and fellowship trained joint replacement surgeons are not benefitted by this technology as correct leg alignment is already reliably achieved. The added cost, operative time, and increased complication rates to not warrant the routine use of computer navigation for knee replacement in most settings.

The 8th Annual Drop & Trot to benefit the Network Against Sexual & Domestic Abuse took place on Saturday, September 26, 2009 at Bogert Park and Bridger Orthopedic was a part of it.  The Drop & Trot consisted of a 10k, 5k or 2k Family/Fun Run/Dog Jog.  5k runners have the option of doing pushups for one minute which deducted from their run time.  There were great prizes and raffle packages.  All in all it was a fun family day and a great way to raise money for such a good cause.

The Network Against Sexual and Domestic Abuse began serving clients in 1979.  The Network is committed to reducing the incidence, and minimizing the impact, of domestic abuse on families and communities.  They provide emergency shelter, crisis intervention, on-going support, referrals and education.  One of the many values of the Network is “we believe in order to have peace in the world, there must be peace in the home”.  The Network depends on volunteers and funding support to sustain their services.  Please contact them at 586-7689 if you would like to be a part of this great cause.

BRIDGER ORTHOPEDIC GIVES BLOOD

The following article was published recently by the Red Cross on MontanaNews.com regarding the shortage of blood in our area.  Bridger Orthopedic will be hosting a blood drive for our employees on Wednesday, September 9, 2009, and encourage all businesses to do the same.

Blood scarce during summer months

Summer may mean sun and fun for some people, but for the Red Cross, summer typically means a blood shortage.

One unit of blood can save up to three lives, but that blood does not keep forever, according to Bambi Renner, a donor recruitment representative.

“I think what people don’t realize when they hear ‘donate blood’ all the time, and they think blood bank. They’ll just go get more blood. Blood is like milk and has an expiration date of 42 days, and so it perishes and we have to constantly replenish the supply. And when it gets critical levels, they have to cancel elective surgeries and there’s a lot of things that happen when the blood supply’s short and if we have disasters or emergencies then it really gets scary,” Renner said.

Because of more international travel, Renner said the pool of able donors is shrinking.

When people travel to certain countries with diseases like malaria, they can not donate blood for one year.
